NICK BROOKS Data Scientist

My Story

Professional Me

My name is Nick Brooks, and I have certainly taken a circuitous route to get to this point! I began my career pursuing filmmaking, earning a degree in Digital Filmmaking and Video Production from the University of Central Arkansas. I was pursuing a Master of Fine Arts from the University of Texas - Austin when the COVID-19 Pandemic shut down our film productions. I took this time to reevaluate my career path, and came to the conclusion to pursue a career as a data analyst. I have always been a sports fan, and one of my favorite pastimes is looking over statistics of various players and teams in an attempt to figure out why certain teams were successful and others were not. As such, I knew that a career in Data Science was the path for me!

I have earned a Bachelor's Degree in Computer Science from Oregon State University, graduating Magna Cum Laude. I am wrapping up my last semester at Willamette University, where I will earn a Master of Science in Data Science. With my well-rounded and diverse skill-set and my positive, friendly attitude, I am confident that I would be a strong addition to any data analysis team. Streaming Service Ratings Analysis

Streaming Service Ratings Analysis

Alongside my partner Anna Clarkson, we gathered information on shows on various streaming platforms in an attempt to answer the question: Does the release schedule of a show impact its popularity and staying power? Streaming platforms such as Netflix often release their shows all at once, whereas other platforms like Max will release shows weekly. Does this impact how popular a show is? How does the streaming platform impact a show's popularity? Do certain genres of show find more popularity and success than others? Check it out!

MLB Betting Spreads Analysis

MLB Betting Spreads Analysis

Alongside my partner Travis McKenzie, we collected the MLB betting spread data from 13 different bookmakers and compared this information with the actual game score data over a three week period in early April 2024. All information was gathered via APIs. We analysed the data to show which teams performed the best against the spread, which bookmaker's spreads were the most accurate on average, and found interesting insights into the variation of spreads between bookmakers.

Olympic Swimming Results Analysis

Olympic Swimming Results Analysis

Together with my partner Jordyn Irwin, we analysed historical Olympic Swimming result data from 1912-2020. We aimed to answer questions such as: How do the times vary between men and women in the same event? How have the finish times changed over the years? Which countries are the most successful in swimming? Is winning consistent? We answer these question and more in our analysis.

MLB Ejections

MLB Ejections Analysis

I analyzed historical MLB ejections data to find key trends in ejections, such as when are players most likely to be ejected and what reasons most often lead to ejections. Along with my project partner Jonathan McGechie, we created eye catching data visualizations to help present our findings to the public, and to help inform MLB managers of situations that can lead to ejections.
